One of the most important things I do for optimal health and to help detoxify my body (because I polluted it with unhealthy foods for 25 years!) is drink 16-24 ounces of fresh veggie juice everyday. It's the first thing I consume each day because it's best to have it on an empty stomach; that way, the body can drink up all the vitamins, minerals and enzymes the juice contains. Also, veggie juice is super cleansing in your digestive system! It helps loosen up stagnant waste and helps is move out of the body, i.e. detoxifying the body.
And I hear all the thoughts going through your head; believe me, I've been there! We've all been conditioned to eat like everybody else...but that way of eating is literally prematurely killing us! We've got to make a change! So, don't knock the juice till ya try it, homies. My harshest skeptic has smiled and given me a wide-eyed "Mmmmm" upon taking a sip of this liquid goodness, so be open-minded and give it a try. You won't regret it. In fact, you may find you love it like I do!
Below is the recipe which I got from my nutritionist, Natalia Rose. Of course, if you can get the ingredients organically, your body will thank you for it as your vegetables will not have been irradiated, doused in pesticides or grown from genetically modified seeds.
Susie's Veggie Lemonade (makes 1-2 servings)
1 head of romaine lettuce
1/2 bunch of spinach or any type of kale
1-2 peeled lemons
1" fresh ginger (you may want to do less if you don't like the spiciness)
Put all the ingredients, one at a time, through your juicer and enjoy! If you need a little more sweetness, add more carrots or a green apple. Want it more lemony? Add another lemon : ) It'll be yummy and will be as filling as a meal!
One of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles is Real Food Daily (aka RFD on La Cienega Blvd.), and they have some very yummy veggie juices that all you Angelinos can try before venturing out on your own and buying a juicer. But believe me, it's not hard to juice! Actually, it's much quicker than making breakfast every morning (not to mention WAY healthier than having eggs, bacon, toast, oatmeal, cereal bars, coffee, and all other mainstream breakfast fare). Contrary to what you hear, breakfast is not the most important meal of the day. In fact, skipping breakfast is one of the best things you can do for your digestive system!
In his book, "The Mucusless Diet Healing System," Arnold Ehret went so far as to say that by not consuming breakfast, thereby allowing your digestive system more time to break down what you've fed it the day prior, "a number of light diseases can be cured." We're not meant to eat as much as we do!
So get one of these babies (or one within your budget) and begin down the path toward true healthfulness!:
